Day 1

Bali to Banyuwangi

09:00Hotel pick-up in Bali, then drive to Gilimanuk Harbour (about 4–5 hours, depending on pick-up point).
FerryFerry to Ketapang Harbour in East Java, about 1 hour.
LunchLocal restaurant in Banyuwangi (own cost).
EveningCheck in at your Banyuwangi hotel and rest before the midnight hike.
Day 2

Ijen Crater to Tumpak Sewu

00:00Leave the hotel and drive 1 hour to Paltuding Base Camp (1,800 m).
02:00Start the 3 km ascent to the crater rim, 1.5–2 hours at your own pace.
Blue fireOptional descent of about 800 m, 30–45 minutes, depending on weather and official access.
SunriseSunrise viewpoint above the turquoise crater lake, 30 minutes to 1 hour.
07:00Walk down to Paltuding, back to the hotel for breakfast, a shower and rest.
11:00Check out and drive 6–7 hours to Pronojiwo, Lumajang.
EveningCheck in near Tumpak Sewu Waterfall.
Day 3

Tumpak Sewu to Bromo

07:00Panoramic viewpoint over the waterfall, then about 1 hour on foot down to the base.
On footPass Tetes Cave and Blue Lake on the way, with time for photos at the main waterfall.
ReturnBack at your stay to freshen up and have lunch (own cost).
AfternoonDrive 3–4 hours to Sukapura, Probolinggo, and check in.
EveningEarly night. The jeep comes before dawn.
Day 4

Bromo Sunrise to Surabaya

03:304WD jeep picks you up from your hotel.
SunrisePenanjakan and Kingkong Hill at about 2,700 m, weather permitting.
Sea of SandJeep across the Sea of Sand, then walk to the crater stairs. Horse is optional, extra cost.
08:30Back at the hotel for breakfast, a shower and check-out.
TransferDrive 3–4 hours to Surabaya. The trip ends on arrival.

What to bring

  • Ijen & Bromo peak temperature can reach 5-15 degree Celsius, the stronger the wind, the colder.
  • Prepare a pair of good walking shoes; trekking shoes, running shoes, hiking shoes (highly recommended for Ijen & Tumpak Sewu climbing)
  • Warm clothing (jacket, trousers, scarf, jacket, hoody)
  • Raincoat and wet wipes for dust removal (can be purchased at petrol stations or convenience stores)
  • Warm cloth hat / beanie
  • Small backpack to carry your stuff up the mountain; personal identity card (or photocopy), mineral water & snack
